What is Sport Integrity Australia?
Sport Integrity Australia is a new organisation that combines the existing functions of the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority, the National Integrity of Sport Unit and the nationally focused integrity functions of Sport Australia.
What will happen to ASADA?
ASADA in name won’t exist beyond 1 July 2020. Sport Integrity Australia will function as Australia’s National Anti-Doping Organisation.
Why was Sport Integrity Australia created?
Sport Integrity Australia is the Government’s response to the findings of the Review of Australia’s Sports Integrity Arrangements (Wood Review). The Review looked at what we do now, where our weaknesses are and what we need to change to protect the 14 million Australians who take part in sport annually.
What did the Wood Review recommend?
One of the main recommendations of the Wood Review was to bring the integrity functions of sport together into one organisation. The Review recommended a national organisation be created for a coordinated response when sports are seeking guidance on integrity related issues.
How will Sport Integrity Australia help sports?
Sporting organisations, and other stakeholders, will benefit from the ability to deal with a single nationally coordinated organisation to address all sport integrity issues.
Threats to the integrity of sport don’t cease even if competition has. This is why Sport Integrity Australia will be here to help sports now as they fight to maintain their basic operations during COVID-19 and then during the coming months, as they return to competition.
Sport Integrity Australia will offer guidance on integrity matters to sports which don’t have developed integrity capabilities.
What about the sports with existing integrity functions?
Sport Integrity Australia won’t be taking over the integrity functions of existing Integrity Units at sports such as the NRL, the AFL, Cricket Australia, the FFA and Rugby Australia.
Sport Integrity Australia will work with those sports and learn from/with them.
Who will be the CEO of Sport Integrity Australia?
David Sharpe APM OAM has been appointed CEO of the new agency. David will continue in his current role as CEO for ASADA until 30 June, then commence as CEO for Sport Integrity Australia on 1 July.
What will Sport Integrity Australia do from July 1?
All functions currently performed by ASADA/NISU/SA will continue to take place under Sport Integrity Australia.
Sport Integrity Australia will provide advice and assistance to counter the:
- use of prohibited substances and methods in sport
- abuse of children and other persons in a sporting environment
- manipulation of sporting competitions, and
- failure to protect members of sporting organisations and other persons in a sporting environment from bullying, intimidation, discrimination or harassment.
What other functions will be added to Sport Integrity Australia?
From July 1, Sport Integrity Australia will develop policy and potential regulation around match fixing, betting, wagering and whistle blower protection. The recommendations will be considered by the Government before being implemented.
What functions will transfer from Sport Australia to Sport Integrity Australia?
Four functions will come across to Sport Integrity Australia, they include:
- Providing complaint handling and dispute resolution policy advice
- Development and maintenance of Member Protection policies covering discrimination, harassment, bullying and abuse
- Child Safeguarding policies and programs
- Both Sport Australia and Sport Integrity Australia will contribute to, and collaborate with, the ‘Play by the Rules’ information and educational program.
What does Sport Integrity Australia mean for anti-doping field staff?
Doping Control Officers and Chaperones roles and duties will not change, they will however work for Sport Integrity Australia.
Field staff will have Clean Fair Sport uniforms, until the new Sport Integrity Australia uniforms are rolled out.
