Substances: Citrus aurentium

Citrus aurentium (aurentium means bitter or sour) is derived from the rind of a Seville orange, and from one other orange found in China. It is grown over a large portion of the world, especially South America and China. It has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years (called zhi shi).

Synephrine is present in the rind. Synephrine (a sympathomimetic stimulant) is chemically related to ephedrine and adrenaline and is also closely related to phenylephrine.

Status in Sport

Synephrine and phenylephrine are permitted in sport under the World Anti-Doping Code 2007 Prohibited List (in effect 01/01/07).
