Anti-Doping Rules: Athlete retirement and reinstatement

Overview: Athlete retirement and reinstatement

This page provides information for athletes regarding retirement from, and reinstatement to, sport.

Athletes are responsible for following the retirement and reinstatement procedures set out in their National Sporting Organisation's (NSO) Anti-Doping Policy.

Athlete retirement

Athletes in ASADA's Registered Testing Pool (RTP) or Domestic Testing Pool (DTP) must notify ASADA by completing the Retirement Notification Form [PDF 36 Kb] if they wish to retire from competition. ASADA will then notify the athlete and the NSO that the athlete has been removed from the RTP or DTP.

Athletes must advise ASADA immediately of their decision to retire. Doing so ensures it is no longer compulsory to comply with certain anti-doping requirements. These requirements may include doping control (testing) and providing whereabouts information.

An athlete who has been notified for sample collection and claims to be retired must provide a sample if ASADA has not received a fully completed retirement notification form from the athlete. Failure to provide a sample could result in an Anti-Doping Rule Violation being recorded against that athlete.

Athlete reinstatement

An athlete that wants to be reinstated to their sport will need to complete the Reinstatement Request Form [PDF 37 Kb] and return to ASADA.

Each NSO's reinstatement procedure specifies a timeframe from the reinstatement date until an athlete is able to compete in an NSO sanctioned event. During this time the athlete must be available for out-of-competition doping control and provide athlete whereabouts information in accordance with the NSO's anti-doping policy.

International Federations

Any athlete entered onto their International Federation Registered Testing Pool is also subject to that federation's retirement and reinstatement requirements.
