Comment on statements made by J Akermanis on the effectiveness of ASADA’s Testing Program for the AFL - 28 Aug 2008

  • ASADA is aware of the comments made by Mr Akermanis.
  • In partnership with ASADA, the AFL conducts a comprehensive, best practice anti-doping program each year.
  • ASADA also conducts performance enhancing drug tests for all major sports and is the Government agency responsible for policing anti-doping.
  • The methodology we use in testing AFL players is no different to that used in Olympic sports and other professional sports.
  • It is not unusual for players to be tested more than once; it is not unusual for players to be tested more than once in a short period of time.
  • This includes not just testing, but the application of the full range of anti-doping tools available to ASADA, including information sharing with the Australian Customs Service, and the ability to conduct comprehensive investigations.
  • The AFL anti-doping program complies with the requirements of the World Anti-Doping Code to make target testing a priority.
  • The testing component of this comprehensive anti-doping program involves over 800 blood and urine tests per year.
  • This includes conducting longitudinal studies of multiple samples collected from the same athlete.
  • The combination of comprehensive testing, longitudinal studies, ASADA’s broad powers of information sharing with other Government agencies, and investigative capability ensures that the AFL has some of the most robust anti-doping measures in place for any Australian sport.
  • ASADA is not in a position to go into any further operational details.
  • We don’t talk about how many tests and when because the success of our program is people not knowing when they might be tested.
