Australia's Driving Force for Pure Performance in Sport
Deterrence · Detection · Enforcement
To achieve its mission of protecting Australia’s sporting integrity through the elimination of doping, ASADA must be able to operate across the whole Australian sporting system – not only at elite levels, but also with the elite athletes of tomorrow.
ASADA can test any athlete subject to a sport’s WADA Code compliant anti-doping policy.
ASADA decided to conduct this testing on the basis of information received through its Stamp Out Doping hotline.
The individual rowers had competed at the Australian National Rowing Championships held under the auspices of Rowing Australia on 11 March 2007. Given their status as competitors in a national competition, these athletes’ were therefore within the scope of Rowing Australia’s anti-doping policy.
Such testing of elite junior athletes is not unprecedented. For example, ASADA undertook sample collection on young athletes participating in the Australian Youth Olympic Festival in January 2007.
One of the keys to ASADA’s success will be our ability to persuade our next generation of elite athletes not to contemplate using prohibited substances.
In our experience, one of the best ways to deter young athletes from doping is to educate them about the dangers of using prohibited substances. ASADA has this afternoon engaged in constructive dialogue with concerned schools and will continue to work with them and sporting bodies at all levels to protect the integrity of Australian sport.
