News: ASADA Media Statement

Statement by Richard Ings, Chairman Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority

Delivered at Media Conference, World Swimming Championships, Melbourne at 9.30pm on Saturday 31st March 2007 - 31 March 2007

In accordance with our governing legislation, ASADA cannot confirm or deny media speculation as to the identity of an athlete.

But we can indicate that a sample collected in May 2006 from an Australian swimmer showed unusual levels of the naturally occurring hormones, testosterone and leutinizing hormone.

ASADA can confirm that it notified an athlete of this matter today.

ASADA is currently working through the procedures outlined in the World Anti Doping Agency Code and the International Standard for testing for unusual readings of these naturally occurring substances.

As required in the WADA code the next step in the process is ascertaining whether there may be a pathological or physiological explanation for these unusual readings of naturally occurring hormones.

The athlete has indicated to ASADA his commitment to the anti-doping process and his willingness to fully assist ASADA in relation to this matter.

At this point there is no suggestion that an athlete has committed an anti-doping rule violation.  Media reports that an athlete has failed a drugs test are simply incorrect.

The time taken by ASADA in reviewing these results is a reflection of the thoroughness and diligence employed by the organization in reviewing complex scientific and medical matters.
