Australia's Driving Force for Pure Performance in Sport
Deterrence · Detection · Enforcement
The Chairman of the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA), Richard Ings, today welcomed the decision of Wendell Sailor to withdraw his appeal and accept his two-year sanction for the use of cocaine.
Mr Sailor tested positive for cocaine on 16 April 2006 at the Super 14 match between the NSW Waratahs and the ACT Brumbies. Mr Sailor was subsequently suspended for two years by the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) judiciary committee.
"The case of Mr Sailor is a strong reminder to all athletes of the serious consequences under the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Code for those caught using cocaine,” said Mr Ings.
"We welcome the commitment made by Mr Sailor to participate in ASADA's comprehensive athlete education program.
"By warning other athletes about the dangers of drug use, Mr Sailor can play an important role in protecting the integrity of Australian sport.
“The ARU and ASADA have worked closely together at all stages of Mr Sailor’s case, and ASADA is completely satisfied with the processes used by the ARU to bring this matter to its successful conclusion,” said Mr Ings.
