Australia's Driving Force for Pure Performance in Sport
Deterrence · Detection · Enforcement
The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) today acknowledged the decision by the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) to hand down a warning and reprimand to Paul Kemal for use of a prohibited substance.
Mr Kemal tested positive to the banned substance Finasteride in an in-competition sample collected by ASADA at the Sandown Park Raceway on 14 September 2007.
While there are legitimate medical uses for Finasteride, it can also be used to mask the use of other prohibited substances.
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has recently changed the status of Finasteride on its Prohibited List to now be categorised as a specified substance.
Under this change, if an athlete can demonstrate the substance was not taken to enhance performance, a sanction ranging from a warning through to a one year suspension can be imposed.
CAMS were satisfied that Mr Kemal was using the substance for legitimate medical reasons and was not attempting to enhance performance or mask the use of a performance enhancing substance.
This case is a further reminder to athletes to be mindful of the status of their medications under the WADA Code and to always get their doctor to check whether a Therapeutic Use Exemption is required.
Any athlete unaware of their responsibilities are advised to seek additional information online at www.asada.gov.au or to call the ASADA Anti-Doping Hotline on 1800 020 506 for more information.
