Bodybuilder Kristofer Callaghan receives two-year sports ban

10 January 2012

Australasian Natural Bodybuilding ’s (ANB) decision to impose a two-year ban on Kristofer Callaghan for the presence and use of a prohibited substance was today acknowledged by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA).

Mr Callaghan tested positive for stanozolol in a sample collected in-competition on 4 June 2011 at the ANB Coral Coast Classic in Townsville, Queensland.

Mr Callaghan’s two-year ban, which was backdated to the date of his provisional suspension, means he is ineligible to participate, as an athlete or support person, in any sports that have adopted a World Anti-Doping Agency compliant anti-doping policy until 19 July 2013.

The results Mr Callaghan obtained on 4 June 2011 are disqualified, with all resulting consequences, including the forfeiture of any medals, points, and prizes.

Stanozolol is categorised as an anabolic agent and is prohibited under the World Anti-Doping Code. Athletes using, or attempting to use, prohibited substances potentially face serious penalties, including lifetime bans for second offences.

Doping violation
Two-year sporting ban for East Perth Football Club player Kane Goodwin

10 January 2012

The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) today acknowledged the final decision by the West Australian Football League’s Anti-Doping Tribunal to impose a two-year ban on East Perth Football Club player Kane Goodwin for the presence and use of clenbuterol and the presence of cocaine.

These prohibited substances were detected in a sample ASADA collected in-competition from Mr Goodwin on 30 April 2011 at Medibank Stadium, Perth.

Mr Goodwin’s ban, which was backdated to the commencement of his provisional suspension, means he is ineligible to participate, as an athlete or support person, in any sport that has adopted a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) compliant anti-doping policy until 30 May 2013.

Clenbuterol is classed as an S1 anabolic agent on WADA’s Prohibited List and is prohibited in-and out-of-competition.

Unsupervised use of clenbuterol can worsen pre-existing heart conditions or hypertension, and there is a risk of overdose and stroke when used at high doses. It is a potentially dangerous drug that, as well as being banned under the Prohibited List, is not approved for human use in Australia.

Cocaine is classed as an S6 stimulant on the Prohibited List and is prohibited in-competition.

Generally, cocaine produces an intense ‘rush’ with users feeling a sense of euphoria, alertness, arousal, and increased confidence. Many users find the drug addictive and may face a number of short and long term health problems including an irregular heartbeat, chest pain, kidney failure, and seizures or stroke.

Any athlete unaware of their responsibilities are advised to seek additional information online at www.asada.gov.au.

Outrigger canoeist Lisa Roberts receives three-month sports ban for cannabis

9 January 2012

The Australian Outrigger Canoe Racing Association’s (AOCRA) decision to impose a three-month ban on outrigger canoeist Lisa Roberts for the presence of a prohibited substance was today acknowledged by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA).

ASADA collected an in-competition sample from Ms Roberts on 14 May 2011 at AOCRA’s National Marathon Championships held at Mooloolaba. The sample returned a positive result for a metabolite of cannabis.

Cannabis is classified as a specified substance on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) Prohibited List, where bans can range from a minimum of a warning to a maximum of four years’ ineligibility in the case of aggravated doping.

Ms Roberts’ ban means she is ineligible to participate, as an athlete or support person, in any sports that have a WADA compliant anti-doping policy until 16 March 2012.

Any athlete unaware of their responsibilities are advised to seek additional information online at www.asada.gov.au.
