Doping Control: Steps in positive test result management

  1. Sample collected by ASADA field staff and sent to laboratory for analysis.
  2. A-sample analysed and adverse analytical finding reported to ASADA from laboratory.
  3. Internal procedure check (sample collection and chain of custody procedure check).
  4. Therapeutic approval check (prior notification and/or therapeutic approval record check).
  5. Athlete notified of adverse analytical finding from A-sample analysis (notification via registered mail or courier or otherwise recognised delivery service).
  6. B-sample analysis - (athlete may waive their right to a B-sample analysis; athlete can determine date for analysis and has right to attend or to nominate a witness to attend on their behalf).
  7. B-sample result received from laboratory.
  8. Athlete notified of adverse analytical finding from B-sample analysis (notification via registered mail or courier or otherwise recognised delivery service).
  9. Seven day submission period from date of notification. This occurs either after B-sample analysis or where the athlete elects not to have the B-sample analysed, from that notification. (athlete may choose not to provide a submission and waive period). Submissions can be made if the athlete is unhappy about any part of the testing process - these submissions are considered by ASADA to make a determination.
  10. Athlete, relevant sports federation and any other relevant Sporting Administration Body including the Australian Sports Commission officially notified by ASADA of the Anti-Doping Rule Violation (adverse analytical finding).
  11. Athlete issued with an infraction notice, recommended sanction either by the sport or from ASADA where ASADA is delegated to do so.
  12. Matter referred to sport tribunal for hearing or athlete accepts recommended sanction.

This standard process is designed to protect the rights of athletes and ensure the integrity of results recorded by ASADA.
