Australia's Driving Force for Pure Performance in Sport
Deterrence · Detection · Enforcement
ASADA is currently investigating possible violations of anti-doping rules in the sport of weightlifting.
The investigation has been acknowledged by the Australian Weightlifting Federation, and has extensive powers under the ASADA Act to investigate any and all allegations of anti-doping rule violations, including but not limited to possession, administration or trafficking of prohibited substances by athletes or support personnel within the sport of weightlifting.
The Terms of Reference for the investigation to inquire into aspects of Australian weightlifting outline the scope and process of the inquiry.
Commissioned in March 2006, the Young report on Australian weightlifting is headed by American lawyer Richard R. Young in the capacity of Principal Investigator. He was one of the principal drafters of the World Anti-Doping Code, and is a highly respected anti-doping investigator.
The first stage of a wide ranging Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) investigation into Australian Weightlifting has been completed and has found evidence of organised distribution and supply channels for a range of prohibited substances including steroids, human growth hormone and the stimulant benzylpiperazine (BZP).
Phase 2 of the Investigation into those findings is continuing and ASADA is working in cooperation with a number of law enforcement agencies including Customs, the Therapeutic Goods Administration and the Victorian and South Australian police forces. As a result, several persons of interest are assisting ASADA with its ongoing investigation and the possible resulting anti-doping rule violations.
