» ASADA establishment
ASADA is an Australian Government body corporate established in 2006, as part of the Government’s commitment to strengthen its Tough on Drugs in Sport Strategy (1999). ASADA was launched on 14 March 2006.
On 23 June 2005, the Australian Government announced the establishment of the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA). Senator the Hon Rod Kemp, former Minister for the Arts and Sport issued a Media Release in relation to the introduction of Legislation for ASADA.
On 3 December 2007 ASADA became part of the Health and Ageing Portfolio and reports to the Minister for Sport, the Hon Kate Ellis MP.
» ASADA powers
In addition to ASDA’s powers, ASADA has:
- the power to conduct investigations on the basis of information acquired or on its own initiative
- the power to receive, use and disclose (where appropriate) information relevant to a possible breach of a sport’s anti-doping policy
- the power to present a case at a sports tribunal or hearing where an athlete or support person has committed an Anti-Doping Rule Violation where delegated by the sport to do so
- the ability to publish findings
- been designated a National Anti-Doping Organisation under the World Anti-Doping Code (the Code).
» ASADA functions
The functions of ASADA are to:
- assume the existing drug testing, education and advocacy functions of the Australian Sports Drug Agency and include the current Australian Sports Drug Medical Advisory Committee
- assume the existing policy development, approval and monitoring roles of the Australian Sports Commission
- define the template that sports should use for their anti-doping policies in accordance with the Code
- investigate allegations of Anti-Doping Rule Violations under the Code
- report its findings from such investigations to relevant sporting organisations
- present cases at a sporting tribunal, committee or other hearing body.
